"Love is an act of blood
and I'm bleeding a pool
In the shape of a heart"
- Space Dye Vest
I've listened to this song at a point in time where my heart was truly messed up. And it just rocks you to sleep and soothes away those worry lines threatening to permanently line your heart. I must say, the lyrics and the soulful music is a much needed panacea.
Today commemorates my blog's 3rd anniversary and I can't believe the madness is still going strong. To many more years of continued dedication. Cheers!!
Love you Dream Theater and thank you for being such an influential force in my life. For being the proverbial silver lining in a life which was like a dark cloud. You rock. \m/

The Best of times
Okay, this is one song that I can relate to and Mike Portnoy as well.
This song is a dedication to Portnoy's dad who passed away after a battle with cancer. He relives their best moments together through this song. I relate to the part where he shares some special moments with his dad and the battle too. I've got a cancer hero here too, with whom every moment shared is special in its own sweet way. :)
Love the best of times. Period.

Shattered
..in a good way of course. :)
I'm referring to the 'Shattered Fortress'. Man, does the song start blow me away or what?! Beautiful. 'This dying soul' has been amongst my favourites and to see a piece of it forming part of the song start in BCSL was nothing short of offering a candy bar to a child. Waaay to go DT! \m/
The twelve step AA which Mike concludes with this song, is indeed a lesson for all to learn from. For more info, please read DT's biography. Will give a lot of insight into the AA journey of Mike's.
As for you five guys, rock on! :)

Soothie
So I wither and render myself helpless
I give in and everything is clear
I breakdown and let the story guide me.
Wow.. wow.. simply WOW. Whoever thought that BCSL would lure me with this master piece. And moreso, something that has focussed on a writer's block. :) Not being a regular blogger.. there have been times when I've wanted to break free from the shackles that bind. And what better way than to let the words flow?!
I've always felt that frustration has a nice way of bringing forth the right words to ease things out. Puts things into perspective in a very sensible way. So for people who experience the writer's block, it should be a lesson.. to let feelings flow and not to block them at all. Once the flows stops..you'll wonder how you could actually write all of that. And yes, truly the best thing would be is to let it out, chaff and grain alike. :)

Through their words
“It definitely takes a certain attention span to be a Dream Theater fan.The fact that we use unusual arrangements and longer song lengths to develop ideas and tell a story can scare people off, because it’s not party music that you can just put on in the background. But the people who get it are passionate about it. I think they appreciate that we never phone it in, and they know that they can expect something interesting from us.” - John Petrucci
“Being a Dream Theater fan is a commitment, but I think that you get out of it what you put into it.Not everybody is willing to take the journey, but I think that if you’re willing to invest the time, it’s gonna be that much more fulfilling. And the reward for us is having these fans that have really stuck by us and helped to sustain us.” - Mike Portnoy
I agree. I do , I do , I do :) :)

50
Yeee haaaaaaa! 50 posts! And still going strong. *Touch Wood* (Home - SFAM plays in the background)
"Dream Theater, you guys have been one major influence in my life. Honestly. No other reason why , I STILL haven't been able to move on from your magic, to any other band for the past 2 odd years. Even if I have discovered other bands this year, there is simply nothing that beats listening to your songs. The BEST stress busters one could have wished for. And inspirational indeed." - Archie
I'd like to dedicate my 50th post to Mike Portnoy. I read in the bio, about how Mike was battling alcoholism and drug addiction through the formative years of the band. And how much it affected his life and his interaction with his bandmates, producers etc, hell ,even his performances!! It really was heartening to read, how Mike decided to kick the habit and be part of the AA network wherever he went. It takes real will power to resist something that has threatened to swallow your life. Kudos Mike! Perhaps all the people out there(DT fans) who've turned to alcohol/drugs for whatever reason, need to take a leaf out of your book.
To THE ONE FANTABULOUS BAND I could've ever come across in this life, all I have to say is this : Keep going on, never stop and cease to amaze the world with your music. \m/

6 degrees - A revisit
Hah! I'm through listening and discovering the magic of SDOIT. And yes, I officially declare that it is one of the BEST albums I've EVER listened to. Pity I did not do it earlier. But then, everything has its time and place eh? It had to be now probably. :)
Like I said in my earlier post, Disc 1 rocks. Disc 2 is simply psychotropic. \m/ It will take DT aeons before they can actually outdo themselves in terms of an album that has the intensity that six degrees has. Well done DT. You guys rock.Rule now. Rule always! :)

Lifting Shadows 100%
Okay I'm through.Their bio was one amazing read. The true one stop book for all Dream Theater fans. An insight into their formative years, through each album, behind the scenes and the inspiration behind their albums..and lots more is contained in 300 pages.. BEAT THAT!!
Re-reads will definitely be there. For one read is simply not enough to assimilate the facts! One informative journey and something that makes one realise what we see on stage is the result of sweat, toil and in many ways so much sacrifice on the part of each crew member of the band. Most importantly makes you realise that ,even though DT seem larger than life, all they are at the end of the day is ordinary human beings like you and me with families and responsibilities, who've done some exemplary work in the world of music.
To many more successful albums and rocking music from you DT! Cheers! My Heros :)

2.Blind Faith - Loved Labrie's work in this song.\vocals rock/
3.Misunderstood - Outstanding lyrics by Petrucci
4.The Great Debate - A pleasant mix of words and music.
5.Disappear - Will not comment as it has not yet formed an impression on my mind.
All in all, Disc 1 is one superb creation!

42:04
What in heaven's name have I missed until now?! God, really I must deserve to be bonked thrice on my head for not having listened to the song Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence!!
If you thought A change of Seasons was long at 23:08, think again. Yeah, SDOIT (the song) contained on Disc 2 of the album is a whopping 42:04 minutes long!! Woot!! Divided into 8 parts this song is the longest DT have composed to date. :D And I discovered it just yesterday. :-/
It speaks on various problems like schizophrenia, post partum depression, autism, multiple personality disorder amongst others.
Read up on this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Inner_Turbulence_(song)
One word for the 8 part composition : MINDBLOWING
I will have this on repeat mode on my T700 for quite sometime to come. :)

SDOIT
I've listened to most of Dream Theater's albums.. but I realised today that there is one album that I have not visited let alone heard entirely!! Six degrees of Inner Turbulence remains untouched to date.
Misunderstood is the one track I love from the album but the other's I have not explored. And what I am going to do is listen to both the Disc's and see what DT have on offer. :)
Will report the feelings in my next post!
Cheers!

Pull me Under
One of the best songs that could've EVER come from DT's stable. A runaway hit on radio and such a phenomenal composition, it is perhaps unmatched by DT's recent songs.
I'm sorry I haven't posted on this song , when it should've come through a long long time ago. The music, the lyrics and the vocals, simply the entire piece is so cohesive, it gives me goosebumps. Beautiful and mindblowing is an understatement as far as this song goes. :)
This world is spinning around me
The whole world keeps spinning around me
All life is future to past
Every breath leaves me one less to my last
Every breath that says ' Pull me under' is worth living a lifetime for. Take a bow DT!

Carpe Diem
It is one of those days, that brings out a lot of stacked up emotions. And the trigger, was the revelation behind the epic song 'A Change of Seasons' (ACoS) which is 23:08 minutes long. ACoS has always inspired me and seared me into pieces, all of the times I've heard it. Every single time of listening to it and it stirs my soul/emotions in a way that perhaps no other song has.
The simple principle of Carpe Diem (Seize the day) is what opened my eyes today. We tend to take life for granted. So also the people around us, forgetting that life is short. It is extremely essential that we let our loved ones know how much we love them every single day, for who knows what tomorrow may bring.
It sometimes is simply not enough to say, 'Oh, they know how much I love them'. A hug, a smile, kind words go a long long way in cementing relationships and reinforcing bonds like never before. Many thanks to ACoS for being a revelation today.
And yes, a lot of carpe diem'ing is to be done. No point hiding all those emotions (the positive ones) and stacking them up. Here's to a free flow of love, faith and all things good!
CARPE DIEM indeed!!

Lifting Shadows 50%
Hah.. I am through reading 50% of their bio! Wow! Yes, I've admired DT for their technical prowress and sheer talent, something that has caught my attention right from the time I got entangled into their music. But , after reading their bio, and being just halfway through mind you, my level of respect for them has moved several notches higher!!
It is really really not easy for 3 college going boys to dream big, drop their education at an institution as illustrious as Berklee, to believe in their own talent and stick through with that one passion in mind, to make it big!! And yes, its indeed such an achievement to be where they are.. doing what they do!
Salutations to all you guys for daring to dreaming big! If you hadn't the world would never have had Dream Theater!
ROCK ON!

Lifting Shadows 16%
I'm done reading approximately 16% of DT's biography.. though I know its a crime on my part to have not finished more in the past one week :D
What can I say! One fun filled journey it has been for me to know how the birth of Dream Theater took place :) The humble beginnings of Majesty, the auditions for vocalists..Chris Collins .. and Charlie Dominici were all an inspirational read!
I've enjoyed the book until now and I know for sure the rest of the bio will only be more engrossing :)
So until I finish more, Happy reading to me :D :D

Dream come true
A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY BRO AND MY DT GURU (ADITYA BHAGATH!)
I visited Dream Theater's official website sometime last year and remember browsing it for quite sometime. And there I came across the fact that DT released their authorized biography and that it was available for sale, but only through order online and not through book stores. It was then that I asked bro(my fellow DT fanatic) if there was ANYWAY we could lay our hands on that biography?!
Days passed into weeks and I forgot about this book. And then bro's turn to go to the US as a grad student came up. And my tryst with Dream Theater kept going strong as part of being me. :) About 15 days back, I got a call from bro, who was incidently scheduled to travel to India for his summer break, that he had something for me! He wanted me to guess what it was? I for the life of me could not guess. And then came the big announcement!!
He had ordered online the AUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY of DT's just for me!!! Hurrrrahhh!! Such a thoughtful gesture!! Honestly! My Heros, I get to read all about them for real..and get to own it all for myself! And it did not stop at that!! I got two DT keychains too!!!! Yipppeee! Am I on Cloud 9? You bet I am!
So yes, as proud as I am, I am equally glad to have my sibling with whom I get to share the DT madness with! I mean, how many of us get to do that??! I sure am lucky!
All hail \m/

The Official Video
Alrightie then! The Official video for the track A Rite of Passage from their new album 'Black Clouds and Silver Linings' is out.
Its superb. Loved watching my favourite five after a long time and it really looked like Myung was having the time of his life in the video. I know BC & SL is gonna rock! Can't wait for the entire album to release!
Its been the best belated bday gift I could've asked for. :)
Happy Watching! Rock on DT! Love you guys!!!

Albums Revisited
This has been my latest passion. An acquired taste. I dunno if everyone will agree. And its not like I care anyway. I am revisiting DT's songs.. albumwise. :D
So if it is Images & Words on my mobile phone today , it will be say.. Awake tomorrow and say.. Systematic Chaos the day after next! It has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me because DT's albums are concept albums and listening to the songs in order are a mindblowing revelation of sorts!
I've felt goosebumps along my arms and legs when I've listened to their creations but believe me revisiting their albums has opened up another problem. My spinal cord. :D If it could be believed, I get shivers and goosebumps down my spine EVERY single time I listen to them. I am ripped apart from head to toe when their music plays. Its sometimes so nice to get lost in their music and never want to come out from that ethereal, surreal atmosphere!
But, reality does hit.. and I reiterate, DT are the BEST and so they shall remain for me. FOREVER.
Psst : Awake has been on my mobile for the past 1 week and I haven't tired of it YET. Talk about the magical spell? ;)

Mail to Jordan Rudess
Okay, I've mailed Jordan Rudess! at fanmail@jordanrudess.com
I've been wanting to e mail Dream Theater and ask them to come to India and perform. I mean, if they can come as close as Bangkok, then they sure can afford to come to India!
So bro suggested, I e-mail Jordan Rudess, who checks his mail regularly and replies too!! So that I did. And here is what I wrote :D
'Dear Jordan Rudess,
If I have to say that I am hugely smitten by Dream Theater, it would probably be a gross understatement. You guys have influenced my life with your music to an extent that I cannot explain, and you can never imagine. Thank you for that.
I would like to tell you Sir, that I can NEVER ever come close to loving any other band as much as I have loved Dream Theater for the rest of my life. And yes apart from your musical genius, I owe a lot if it to my brother who introduced me to your music.
I write this mail on behalf of him and me. Both of us Sir are huge fans of Dream Theater and we've decided that someday we'll both watch you guys perform live.
I'd like to extend my warmest appreciation to your work on the song HOME from the album Scenes from a Memory. I could not believe my ears when I heard Sitar strains in a Dream Theater song, and was even more stunned to know, it came from your synthesizer!! Bravo !!!! It has taken my respect for you a notch higher than before Sir. My humble respects to you.
Sir, I would like to ask you and your other band members to consider touring India. I am from India and I would love to see you guys perform here. I was recently watching the Chaos in Motion tour CD and found that you came as close as Bangkok. But , I would like to know if you would consider performing in India anytime soon.
Please keep in mind Sir, that even if circumstances don't permit you to perform here (though I'll pray for DT to perform in India), I'll make sure, my brother and I watch you live atleast once together somewhere in this world. It would be a crowning glory and a fitting tribute for the both of us to see you, OUR HEROS,live.
Wishing you the very best in all your future endeavours Sir. Rock on! \m/ '
Ha Ha, I know.. I know.. I AM nuts.. carve that onto a wall and you'd be right. :D But hey, that's all about the magic that DT works on me you know. Its inexplicable. So yeah. Till the madness continues I'll just enjoy it and take it all in. All hail! \m/

Honor Thy Father \m/
Oh, Mike Portnoy? What do I do with you? Ummm.. praising you is all I can do for the time being. :D
Well , I am referring to the song , Honor thy Father from the album 'Train of thought'. Oh, the lyrics have such awesome depth in them, I wonder how much Portnoy must've thought to write such kick ass lyrics?!! But then, every song of DT's have powerful lyrics, and such amazing depth, so a lot of thought sure goes into penning them down.
Back to my post, Honor thy father talks about a child deprived of the love of a father and how the child grows to hate him. Why am I writing? Read the lyrics and understand for yourselves!
'Expecting everyone to bow and kiss your feet
Don't you see respect is not a one way street
Blaming everyone for all that you've done wrong
I'll get my peace of mind when you hear this song
On and on and on and on it goes
And with every passing day true colors show
How can you ever sleep a wink at night
Pretending that everything is alright
And have the balls to blame this mess on me
Never in my life have I seen someone
Oblivious to the damage he has done
You're the rotted root in the family tree
Watch where you walk
Don't you dare cross the crooked step
Watch the way you talk
Don't cross the crooked step'

Endless Sacrifice
Endless Sacrifice features in the album Train of Thought. One of my most favourite albums of DT's. This song is pure bliss in all ways possible. The lyrics, the music, the vocals are pure magic.
It talks about the travails of living apart , and how one has to suffer and compromise continuously in a relationship which breaks up.
Beautiful piece of work.
"Won't be forgotten
Or taken for granted
I'll always remember
Your endless sacrifice"

Smooth
Its smooth. From start to finish. I'm talking about 'Lines in the sand' from Falling into Infinity. God in heaven.. right from the vocals(that I am a huge fan of) to the riffs.. Oh the entire song just flows like a piece of silk slipping through your fingers!
Lines in the sand is going to stay on repeat mode on my playlist for a longtime to come. \m/
3:07:25!
3:07:25?
Yes. Three hours , seven minutes and twenty five seconds of watching my Heros perform live across the world, as part of their Chaos in Motion tour 2007-08! What could be better? Its been my first time DT-performing-live-watching thing.. so I was totally glued to it! Cranked the volume up and sat through 180 minutes of sheer ecstasy!
Now I know what it'd be like if I had to go for a DT concert myself. The atmosphere that I got to see atthe concerts that DT played at, the crowds lined up, were just mindblowing to say the least! I mean, for a band started by three boys when they were in music school, to come such a long way and become phenomenal stars is indeed a great thing!
Watch the Chaos in motion tour DVD please! Its amazing. And what is the good word I use? yes, AWESOME!! :D
To the gig fellas! Happy watching!

Home - SFAM
Oh this is sheer heaven! Jordan Rudess? Take a bow. NOW! Sitar strains on a synthesizer? I mean for real? That's what the underlying music of Home (Scenes from a Memory) start off with. The Indian feel to it comes from Jordan Rudess' synthesizer and then followed by Petrucci's guitar! I mean , what in the name of good heaven have they composed?
I love this song to pieces and for anyone who wants to listen to DT , must surely listen to this piece of work. MAHA awesome! DT I prostrate before thee. Nothing to beat you guys anyday. No one. :) Hail you!!

Take Away my Pain
Its been a long time. And no justice is done to the fact that I've not been posting on my blog at all. Been falling into infinity myself. ;)
But hey, nothing like experiencing the high and the low in the span of 12 months you know. And something that gives you the courage to look things in the eye no matter how tough and be able to face it. Yes, I think its been a great journey!
So like the lyrics of Take away my pain from 'Falling into infinity' .. I say too
Take away my pain
Leave the cold outside
Please don't let it rain
Don't stumble on my pride
Take away my pain
I'm not frightened anymore \m/
Bring on 2009! Good times for you DT! Looking forward to some awesome music too! Rock on!
